You're Eating More Than You Think

Studies consistently show people underestimate calorie intake by 20–47%. This isn't cheating — it's a cognitive blind spot. Cooking oils, condiments, 'small bites,' and liquid calories add up invisibly. Accurate food logging (with a food scale, not measuring cups) typically reveals a surplus disguised as a deficit. Most people who 'can't lose weight in a deficit' are simply not in one.

You're Burning Less Than You Think

Fitness trackers and gym machines consistently overestimate calorie burn by 20–90%. 'Eating back' exercise calories based on these estimates is a surefire way to stall. Your TDEE (total daily energy expenditure) also decreases as you lose weight — meaning your deficit shrinks over time even if your diet doesn't change.

Metabolic Adaptation

Prolonged caloric restriction reduces metabolic rate through multiple mechanisms: lower thyroid output, reduced NEAT (non-exercise activity thermogenesis), and decreased leptin. This is real and significant after extended dieting. Diet breaks (returning to maintenance for 1–2 weeks) and refeeds (higher carb days) help counteract this adaptation.

Water Retention Masking Fat Loss

Sleep and Stress

If your diet and training are on point but results are absent, sleep quality and stress management are the next places to look.

Most cases of 'stalled fat loss' resolve with more precise tracking, realistic calorie expenditure estimates, and attention to sleep and stress. Audit these before concluding something more complex is at play.
